Train walking: via Junne from Ommen to Mariënberg

From primeval forest to heathland
Ommen train station is the starting point of this route, on the edge of Ommen. From here you walk through the hamlet of Besthmen and then cross the forests around Ommen. Originally, these were primeval forests, but they were largely cut down. Dry heathlands and sand drifts were the result. At the end of the 19th century and in the 20th century, the forests were planted again on a large scale. As a result, you can still walk through beautiful forest areas here. Only here and there is a small heathland or a sandy plain to be found. The forests now have a protected status, so that not everything can simply be cut down.

Views at Beerze
The villages of Junne and Beerze are located on the edge of the forest area. Around Beerze you can enjoy surprising views in a varied landscape. You will also find all kinds of animals here. Keep your eyes open, don't make too much noise and you might still be able to spot a deer.

Marienberg on the Vecht
Eventually you will arrive at the train station Mariënberg. Mariënberg is a small village near the Vecht. The village originated in the 14th century when the Brothers from the monastery at Sibculo built a hut here as a base for their work in the peat areas east of the current village. From there a village originated on this spot.
